What is the basis of the limit of the president to two elected terms?|||George Bush|||Because FDR never left until he died|||Faina, alot has to do with age and health. And besides, 2 terms is enough dont ya think?|||Well, when they set it, the legislators used the years George Washington was in office as their standard. "If it's good enough for George Washington, it should stand at 8" was the phrase used.|||The Republicans couldn't get FDR out of office.|||After Franklin Roosevelt was elected to four consecutive terms, the conservatives in Congress passed an amendment (the 22nd) limiting the president to two terms. They wanted to repeal it to give Reagan a shot at a 3rd term, but they couldn't get the votes together.|||This was done following the election of Franklin Delano Roosevelt to 4 terms (1932, 36, 40, and 44). Although he only served 12 years, lawmakers were afraid of a system where one person could gain too much power in our system of checks-and-balances. Hence the 22nd Amendment being ratified in 1951. Although the idea had been proposed as far back as George Washington.|||so the Presidency cannot perpetuate itself into a Dictatorship. So you do not get a dictator for life as in some countries. Notice how Vlad Putin is still in charge in Russia even after his two term are up? He wants to keep the reins of power till he dies. Term limits are found usually in presidential and semi-presidential systems as a method to curb the potential for dictatorships, where a leader effectively becomes "president for life".|||because the republicans were jealous that FDR kept being re elected by the people, and so they decided that the only way they would ever have a chance of getting one of their 2nd rate corrupt republican canidates elected ,would be to limit the term of FDR and the presidentcy.





personally I think it`s wrong to tell the american people that they can`t vote for whom they want as president, but have to settle for some 2nd rate contender merely because the person they want to vote for has already served 2 terms.

FDR was the only president who served more than two terms because of the War(WWII). In 1951 the 22nd amendment to the Constitution was ratified officially limiting the presidency to two terms. This country was founded because of the need to escape England which was ruled by a king. The last thing we would want is to be governed by a king, even a benevolent one that was elected by the people. Bill Clinton is attempting to get around the 22nd amendment by getting his wife elected and then having a say in her decisions.
